Black tourmaline is the iron-rich black variety of the tourmaline group, properly named schorl. The crystal forms in long striated columns that catch light along their length, giving even rough specimens a quiet sheen.
Across traditions it is the workhorse protective stone, the one people keep by the front door, on the desk, or under the pillow. Modern users pair it with rose quartz to soften the edge and with selenite to keep it cleared.
